Chevrolet Vehicle Identification (VIN)

1965-69 Chevrolet Vehicle Identification Numbers

Just as there are numbers that identify each component installed on a vehicle, there are numbers that relate to the whole vehicle to identify such things as model, engine, accessories and trim. These numbers are the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), Trim Tag Numbers, and model Identification number.

Location of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) varies with model. On 1965 through 1969 models, the first five digits of the VIN are also the Model Identification number.

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is probably the most important number on a car. If you do not know how to decode a VIN on a particular Chevrolet, you will be unable to verify other components or numbers.

The 1st digit of the VIN signifies the General Motors Division for that particular car. In Chevrolet vehicles this digit will always be a “1.”

The 2nd and 3rd digits indicate the vehicle series as well as the engine for the car. If the 3rd digit of the VIN is odd (1,3,5,7) then the original engine would have been a 4-or 6- cylinder. If the 3rd digit is even (2,4,6,8) then the original engine was V-8.

The 4th and 5th digits indicate the body style of the car. For example a 2 door sport coupe or a 2-door sedan.

The 6th digit signifies the model year of that particular car. This number only specifies the model year, not the calendar year in which the car was actually built. For example, all early 1965 model year vehicles built prior to January 1, 1965, would sill have the digit “5” on the VIN plate.

The 7th digit, a letter, signifies the final assembly plant where the car was manufactured.

The final 6 digits represent the continuous sequence number of that specific vehicle at each assembly plant.
